Romney Eviscerated By Opponent

(DCWatchdog.com) – Republican US Senator and failed presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who tends to be popular with Democrats, has been destroyed by a GOP challenger for harboring irrational hatred against former President Donald Trump.

In Trump’s second impeachment trial in January 2021, Romney, the junior US senator from Utah, famously voted to convict the then-president over the January 6 events at the US Capitol. At the same time, Mike Lee, the senior Utah senator, voted to acquit Trump.

According to Trent Staggs, the mayor of Riverton, Utah, and a candidate for Romney’s US Senate seat in the 2024 election, voters in his state are tired of the incumbent senator’s “misplaced or misguided passion against” Trump.

Staggs’ comments come after, in an interview last month, the former president described Romney as a “loser” who would be unseated by “the right candidate” if he chose to run for reelection in 2024.

“I can really understand why President Trump would have those feelings,” the Riverton mayor told the Sirius XM program “Breitbart News Saturday.”

“Here’s a guy in Romney that really earnestly sought his approval back in 2012, highlighted that endorsement, really used it from the president, and then in 2016, goes out… at the University of Utah, gives a speech where he calls him a phony and a fraud, and really attacked President Trump. And then, of course, after he won the election, he went hat in hand again to seek his approval and kind of tried to make amends, got the endorsement again in ’18. And here he goes, here he goes again, just constantly going after the president,” Staggs elaborated.

He insisted that if Romney had campaigned so vigorously against Barack Obama as he now did against Trump, he would have won the 2012 presidential election.

“Utahns are sick and tired of this. They’re tired of his misplaced or misguided passion against President Trump, and what we’d rather see is action. We’d rather see our senators… bring about conservative principles in this country and the change that we need that he had campaigned on,” explained the Riverton mayor.

Staggs also slammed Romney’s recent opinion article in The Wall Street Journal in which the senator called for a single GOP candidate who could stop Trump from winning the 2024 nomination.
