The incident brings to light the increasing concerns about marine life interactions along the country’s coastlines.
A possible shark bite occurred at Sunset Beach on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, around 11 a.m. near the 31st Street beach access point.
Emergency responders received a call at 11:05 a.m. regarding the incident.
Sunset Beach Fire Department reported that Barton, visiting from New Mexico, sustained a leg injury.
“[I] just got done riding an epic wave and then felt a shark…bite my leg” explained Barton, demonstrating the terrifying nature of such encounters.
Barton immediately headed to shore, realizing he may have just experienced a shark bite.
Upon the arrival of Beach Rescue personnel, Barton was conscious and alert.
Rescuers administered medical care before transporting him to a hospital, where he received 11 stitches for his leg injury.
The full extent of his injuries has not been disclosed, although a doctor noted the wound resembled a shark bite.
“In light of this incident, we encourage all visitors to be cautious,” officials urge, as marine life, including sharks, are natural inhabitants of these waters.
Sunset Beach officials are advising caution due to the presence of these creatures, stressing the importance of visitor vigilance.
While Barton and his family reported seeing a shark nearby following the incident, authorities have not confirmed any further shark sightings.
Despite the encounter, Barton expressed his intention to continue swimming, albeit with increased caution.
The previous year saw 47 unprovoked shark bites globally, with four resulting in fatalities.
In America, there were 28 occurrences, with one tragic ending.
While these instances are rare, beachgoers should heed warnings and utilize common sense when enjoying the ocean.
Sunset Beach officials are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.
Visitors should remain informed and take all recommended precautions to ensure their safety in coastal waters.
