This heinous act has sparked outrage and initiated a criminal investigation to bring those responsible to justice.

On July 1, 2025, in southern Taranto, Bruno was found lifeless by his trainer, Arcangelo Caressa, who expressed his deep grief and anger over the incident.

Bruno, a seven-year-old bloodhound, had an impressive career, successfully finding nine individuals during critical search and rescue operations.

Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, condemned the atrocity as “vile, cowardly, unacceptable,” emphasizing the shock and horror this act has generated throughout the nation.

The indignation is amplified by the strong bond and service that Bruno provided, being described as a loyal companion and hero by his trainer Caressa.

Caressa, who operates a volunteer animal rescue organization, ENDAS, believes he was the true target due to past threats related to his anti-dogfighting efforts.

His suspicions are further fueled by the thought that competitors involved in profiting from such illegal activities may have orchestrated this vile attack.

Caressa shared his heartache, stating, “It was deliberately a horrific act to cause the dog intense suffering, because feeding him bites filled with nails means tearing apart his insides, tearing apart his esophagus and internal organs and causing excruciating pain.”

“Today I died with you… You fought for your whole life to help human beings, and it was humans who did this to you,” said Arcangelo Caressa, cited by Global News.

Lawmaker Michael Vittoria Brambilla filed a criminal complaint under recently enacted laws enforcing harsher penalties for animal mistreatment.

Known as the Brambilla law, it promises up to four years in prison and up to 60,000 euros in fines for those found guilty of such atrocious acts.

Vittorio Feltri, editor of Il Giornale, expressed the sentiment of many Italians, observing, “Bruno had done more for civic good in Italy than many citizens.”

Such assertions highlight how Bruno’s presence was valued beyond his role as a sniffer dog, touching on his contributions to society’s safety and security.

The tragic end of Bruno’s life serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing war against barbaric practices like illegal dogfights and unnecessary cruelty toward animals.

As the investigation continues, authorities and activists alike remain committed to ensuring that justice prevails for Bruno, a dog whose legacy of heroism will not be forgotten.
