(DCWatchdog.com) – After putting his declining cognitive abilities on blast, Democrats in the 2024 down-ballot races will likely start distancing themselves from Joe Biden after his mediocre debate performance against former President Donald Trump last week.
According to a recent report, Democrats in swing districts and other competitive races may decide to avoid having Biden campaign with them.
One anonymous House Democrat stated that “frantic efforts” will be made to avoid the Bidens during the campaign season.
“I don’t ever want to see him here,” the lawmaker said. “Every single donor — and I’m only calling major donors — is furious and wants him to step aside.”
Another House Democrat, who also wished to remain anonymous, said that party members in swing districts were “freaking out” about Biden’s impact on the ticket.
Likewise, another expressed, “I’m not a frontliner, but Trump could expand [the electoral map] to a point where I’m in a 1- or 2-point race.”
Distancing from an unpopular president is a common strategy in congressional races, but Biden’s unique political vulnerabilities as the oldest president in history add a new twist.
While congressional Democrats have generally polled ahead of Biden this cycle, there are growing fears that his unpopularity will drag down their races.
Moreover, some members openly acknowledged Biden’s poor performance, and many swing district House Democrats avoided questions about it at the Capitol, with one even reportedly pretending to be on a phone call.
The Biden campaign has been spinning since last Thursday, claiming that Biden’s status in battleground states and his fundraising remain unchanged. As Breitbart News reported, the Biden family insists that Joe stays in the race.
The report said:
“While many donors, Democrat officials, and voters were left questioning if Biden would be able to serve a second term as president and calling for Biden to be replaced, the Biden family is reportedly encouraging the president ‘to stay in the race and keep fighting,’ several anonymous sources close to the situation told the outlet.”
“Hunter Biden was described as being ‘one of the strongest voices’ encouraging the president not to drop out of the presidential race,” it added.
