Tucker Carlson has revealed the CIA is preparing criminal charges against him for allegedly acting as an unregistered foreign agent, claiming intelligence agencies are reading his private texts with Iranian contacts to frame him in what he calls political persecution during wartime.

Intelligence Agencies Target Conservative Voice
Tucker Carlson announced on March 14, 2026, that the Central Intelligence Agency is preparing a criminal referral to the Department of Justice against him under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. Carlson revealed the CIA has been monitoring his private text messages with Iranian contacts from before the current US-Iran conflict.
He categorically denied acting as a foreign agent or receiving payments from any foreign government, stating his only loyalty is to the United States. This alarming development raises serious questions about government surveillance of American citizens exercising their First Amendment rights.

Pattern of Surveillance and Intimidation
This is not the first time intelligence agencies have targeted Carlson’s private communications. In 2021, the National Security Agency intercepted his text messages with an American contact regarding a potential interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Those texts were subsequently leaked to the New York Times in what Carlson described as an attempt to sabotage the interview.
The current CIA action follows the same troubling pattern of intelligence community overreach against journalists and commentators who challenge establishment foreign policy narratives, particularly regarding Israel’s influence on American decision-making.
Wartime Authoritarianism and Deep State Tactics
Carlson’s allegations come as the United States remains at war with Iran, now in its sixteenth day of conflict. He warned that countries typically become more authoritarian during wartime, and this case demonstrates how intelligence agencies exploit such circumstances to silence dissenting voices.
The Foreign Agents Registration Act requires individuals acting on behalf of foreign governments to register with the Justice Department, but journalistic contacts with foreign sources are typically exempt unless the communicator is specifically acting as an agent.
Carlson emphasized the ludicrous nature of framing routine pre-war conversations as criminal foreign agent activity, describing it as a deliberate attempt to punish him for his views.
Unresolved Qatar Allegations Cloud Picture
Separate from the Iran claims, Carlson faces unproven allegations regarding financial ties to Qatar. Documents show Qatar-linked firm GRV Strategies pitched stories to Fox News and the New York Post in 2024-2025 praising Qatar’s role against Iran.
Carlson interviewed Qatar’s Prime Minister in late 2025, facilitated by Lumen8 Advisors, which receives $180,000 monthly from the Qatari Embassy. Activist Laura Loomer accused Carlson of receiving a $200,000 payment, which his team denied.
No verified evidence of such payment has emerged. Qatar has sought to counter Republican criticism of its Hamas and Iran connections through media influence operations documented in Department of Justice FARA filings.

The controversy has intensified divisions within the Republican Party over Israel and foreign policy. Senator Ted Cruz labeled Carlson a “demagogue” spreading antisemitism, while Carlson dismissed Cruz as positioning himself for a 2028 presidential run.
Critics like Mark Dubowitz of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies called Carlson’s claims “fever-swamp delusions,” while supporters suggest the entire situation represents Trump administration strategic maneuvering against Iran.
As of today, no formal charges have been filed, leaving the allegations in a preliminary investigation stage that tests whether FARA enforcement will be weaponized against journalists who question foreign entanglements.
