Trump Gets Surprise Endorsement

(DCWatchdog.com) – In unexpected news that will help the GOP front-runner campaign in the 2024 elections, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell surprisingly decided to support former President Donald Trump’s bid for the administration, despite McConnell’s years-long criticism of him.

This surprising move followed Trump’s significant victories on Super Tuesday which drove him closer to securing the GOP nomination.

McConnell, who had been a vocal opponent of Trump, declared, “It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for President of the United States.”

He acknowledged their collaboration during Trump’s first term and claimed they achieved notable accomplishments for Americans.

This backing came just a week after McConnell revealed his intention to step down from Senate GOP leadership by the end of the year. The timing aligned with Trump’s advancing prospects for the nomination especially after Nikki Haley’s withdrawal from the race earlier that day.

McConnell’s endorsement makes him the last among top GOP congressional leaders to support Trump, which signaled a potential consolidation of power for the former president within the party.

Expressing gratitude for McConnell’s support, Trump wrote, “Thank you, Mitch. I look forward to working with you and a Republican Senate MAJORITY to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

McConnell’s recent struggles to maintain control over his conference have been evident, with some notable disagreements on issues like border security and foreign aid.

Despite this issue McConnell’s support for Trump matched his earlier commitment to support the Republican nominee, which emphasized his role as the Senate GOP leader.

“I said in February of 2021, shortly after the attack on the Capitol, that I would support President Trump if he were the nominee of our party, and he obviously is going to be the nominee of our party,” McConnell reiterated his stance and stated when questioned about the endorsement.
