State of Emergency Declared (Video)

HAPPENING NOW

(DCWatchdog.com) – Demonstrating the definition of a Third World “failed state,” the Caribbean nation of Haiti has declared a state of emergency after it saw the declaration of an insurrection by a gang leader, two prison breaks involving thousands of inmates, and days of street battles.

This declaration entails a curfew across western Haiti, effective for the next three days, Breitbart News reports.

It orders the evacuation of streets from 6:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., with exceptions made solely for police, firefighters, medical personnel, and journalists.

Earlier, on Friday, gang leader Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier declared his readiness to fight until Prime Minister Ariel Henry is removed from office.

Cherizier is a former police officer and a dominant figure among the gangs that have assumed control in Haiti after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021,.

Cherizier has urged civilians to remain indoors during the conflict and has called upon all gangs to unify under his command to initiate a strategy aimed at the kidnapping and assassination of government officials.

“The battle will last as long as it needs to. We will keep fighting Ariel Henry. To avoid collateral damage, keep the kids at home,” he said during a press conference.

Cherizier has openly targeted government figures, including the hunt for ministers and the Director General of the PNH, Frantz Elbé.

“The Haitian people must be liberated. We will do it with our weapons. All the armed groups in the country, in the provinces, and in Port-au-Prince are more united than ever. We, the armed men, have decided to take the future into our own hands,” he proclaimed.

The capital, Port-au-Prince, witnessed escalating chaos with gunfire, barricades, and the aftermath of violence evident in its streets.

Gang factions have been reported to assault police stations and key infrastructure.

In light of recent attacks, including the death of police officers at the hands of gang members and the orchestrated prison breaks facilitating the escape of over 4,000 inmates, the government’s declaration of a state of emergency seeks to restore order.

Amidst this crisis, the U.S. embassy in Haiti has issued a security advisory, urging American citizens to evacuate the country promptly, taking advantage of available commercial transportation options when safe.

The communication and transportation sectors have faced disruptions, with telecom services being temporarily severed but later restored, highlighting the resilience of local workers under precarious conditions.
