In an interview with CBS News aired Sunday, Jason Owens, the new head of the Border Patrol, made clear his worry regarding the substantial number of migrants – over 140,000 – who have successfully bypassed official capture and have snuck into the US as gotaways.
Owens disclosed that the Border Patrol is nearing the milestone of one million detentions of migrants attempting to cross into the US through non-official entry points along the border with Mexico in the fiscal year 2024, which began in October.
He further noted that for the third year in succession, his agency is poised to document a total of two million arrests by the fiscal year’s conclusion at the end of September.
“That number is a large number, but what’s keeping me up at night is the 140,000 known gotaways,” Owens stated in his inaugural interview as the chief of Border Patrol.
He raised several questions about the intentions and backgrounds of these migrants, underscoring the mystery surrounding their actions and the potential implications for national security.
“Why are they risking their lives and crossing in areas where we can’t get to? Why are they hiding? What do they have to hide? What are they bringing in? What is their intent? Where are they coming from? We simply don’t know the answers to those questions. Those things for us are what represent the threat to our communities,” the new BP chief asked.
He further elaborated on the perceived dangers, asserting that the situation amounts to “a national security threat.”
“Border security is a big piece of national security. And if we don’t know who is coming into our country, and we don’t know what their intent is, that is a threat and they’re exploiting a vulnerability that’s on our border right now,” Owens explained.
At the same time, he said he believed that the overwhelming majority of migrants seeking entry into the US were essentially “good people.”
He expressed his wish that these individuals would opt for legal entry methods rather than breaking US laws.
