Discovery of Melodee Buzzard’s Body

A couple taking photos in rural Wayne County, Utah, outside Cainville spotted Melodee Buzzard’s decomposed body on Dec. 6, 2025. Utah detectives responded to the call and noted gunshot wounds to the head. DNA analysis on Dec. 22 confirmed the remains belonged to the 9-year-old reported missing from Lompoc, California.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives linked cartridge cases from the site to evidence at the Buzzard residence. Santa Barbara County authorities announced the findings on Dec. 23.

Mother’s Arrest and Non-Cooperation

Ashlee Buzzard, 40, faced arrest on Dec. 23, 2025, for first-degree murder after months of refusing to cooperate in the missing person probe. Sheriff-Coroner Bill Brown detailed her calculated evasion during a news conference.

Previously, in early November, authorities charged her with false imprisonment of a man aiding the search, though a judge dismissed it. Buzzard now sits in custody without bail as the investigation continues with FBI assistance.

Timeline of the Disappearance

Lompoc Unified School District reported Melodee missing on Oct. 14, 2025, last seen since August. Authorities visited the home; Ashlee offered no explanation for her daughter’s whereabouts. Detectives served a search warrant the next day.

Surveillance video from a rental car lot captured mother and daughter in wigs departing in a 2024 white Chevy Malibu. The pair’s last sighting came Oct. 9 on security footage at the Colorado-Utah border; detectives believe murder followed soon after.

Evidence of Premeditated Evasion and Murder

Ashlee Buzzard drove through Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska, switching wigs and at one point using a New York license plate on the Malibu. Searches of the family home, storage locker, and rental car on Oct. 30 yielded an expended cartridge case at the residence and similar live ammunition in the vehicle.

Investigators recovered substantial evidence pointing to Buzzard. Brown called the maternal filicide “particularly shocking” for its premeditated heartlessness, underscoring failures in protecting vulnerable children from those who should safeguard them.
