Chevy’s Wildest Silverado Yet

CHEVY'S WILDEST TRUCK

Chevrolet just dropped the most powerful Silverado in the truck’s entire history — and the engine under the hood is only half the story.

Quick Take

  • Chevrolet officially unveiled the 2027 Silverado 1500 with two all-new V8 engines — a 5.7-liter and a 6.6-liter — replacing the outgoing 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter motors.
  • Chevrolet calls it the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in the half-ton truck class, though exact horsepower and torque numbers have not been released yet.
  • The cabin gets a massive 16.3-inch touchscreen, a 12.2-inch digital driver display, and an available front passenger screen — a first for the Silverado.
  • Seven trims are offered, including three off-road variants, with pricing expected to start near $40,000 and climb past $80,000 for top models.

Two New V8s Replace Engines That Served for Years

The 2027 Silverado’s biggest news lives under the hood. Chevrolet replaced its long-running 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8 engines with all-new 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter sixth-generation small-block V8s. These are not updates or refreshes — they are clean-sheet engines. The 5.7-liter replaces a 5.3-liter that made 355 horsepower.

The 6.6-liter steps in for the 6.2-liter that produced 420 horsepower. Both new engines have greater displacement, and Chevrolet says they deliver more power and torque than their predecessors.[1]

Chevrolet has not released official horsepower or torque numbers yet, which is a notable gap for a truck calling itself the most powerful Silverado ever.

Industry sources and automotive outlets estimate the 5.7-liter will produce around 400 horsepower, while the 6.6-liter could reach 475 horsepower or higher.[13]

Those are credible estimates from outlets with strong track records, but buyers should treat them as educated guesses until Chevrolet confirms the figures closer to production. Chevrolet has confirmed that the 6.6-liter is the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in the half-ton class.[4]

The Chevy 350 Returns in a Modern Form

The 5.7-liter engine carries real history. The original Chevrolet 350 cubic-inch small block — which is exactly what 5.7 liters equals — powered everything from muscle cars to work trucks for decades.

It became one of the most beloved American engines ever built. Bringing it back in a modern sixth-generation form is not just a marketing move.

It signals that Chevrolet is leaning into its heritage rather than chasing trends. That is a decision worth respecting, and it will resonate strongly with truck buyers who have always valued American engine tradition over novelty.

The Cabin Gets a Serious Technology Upgrade

Every 2027 Silverado comes standard with a 16.3-inch center touchscreen and a 12.2-inch digital driver display.[6] That is not optional equipment — it is standard on every trim.

Top trims like the ZR2 and High Country also add an 11.5-inch front passenger screen, a feature Ram has offered and buyers have responded to positively.

The 2027 Silverado also gets the first panoramic sunroof ever offered on the nameplate. These are meaningful additions, not checkbox features, and they bring the Silverado’s interior closer to what buyers now expect from a truck that can cost as much as a luxury sedan.

The 10-speed automatic transmission is now standard across all four engine options.[5] That includes the turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder, the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel, and both new V8s.

Standardizing the 10-speed is a practical win for buyers who previously had to check trim levels carefully to know what gearbox they were getting. The diesel remains a segment-exclusive option, which is a genuine competitive advantage Chevrolet has held for years and wisely kept.

Seven Trims, Three Off-Road Options, and No Hybrid Yet

The 2027 Silverado launches with seven trims: Work Truck, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, Silverado, Trail Boss, ZR2, and High Country.[1] Three of those seven are off-road-focused, which reflects where buyer demand has shifted.

The ZR2 is described as the most capable off-road Silverado ever built. Pricing is expected to start in the high $30,000s and stretch past $80,000 for fully loaded High Country and ZR2 Bison models.[2]

One notable absence is a hybrid powertrain. Ford offers one in the F-150, and its omission here is a gap Chevrolet will eventually need to address, though it has not announced plans to do so yet.

A Bold Claim That Still Needs Hard Numbers to Back It Up

Calling something the most powerful version of itself ever is a strong statement, and Chevrolet made it loudly.[1] The claim is likely accurate based on what is known — bigger displacement, new architecture, and a confirmed class-leading naturally aspirated V8 title. But without official horsepower and torque figures at launch, buyers are being asked to take the company’s word for it.

That is a reasonable ask given Chevrolet’s track record, but the full story will only be told when production numbers arrive later this year. The truck looks right. The engines sound right. Now Chevrolet needs to prove it with the data.
