Video: Pelosi Tells Team USA Olympians To Keep Quiet

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi

(DCWatchdog.com) – For at least the second time in as many days, United States House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told Team USA Olympians currently competing in Beijing, China, not to speak out in protest of the horrendous human rights abuses that the Chinese government engages in both inside China and around the world.

You can watch the video clip of Pelosi warning American athletes below.

Pelosi states, “I wish the athletes well. I do not encourage them to speak out against the Chinese government there because I fear for their safety if they do.”

While Pelosi may be genuinely concerned for the safety of the American athletes if they do speak out while on Chinese soil, she is receiving criticism from all sides for her comments.

Many believe the athletes should be free to speak out if they feel strongly about China’s well-documented history of abuses. And, as numerous commentators have noted, athletes often garner far more media attention and credibility when they speak out than politicians and elected officials.

Further, as Congressman Dan Crenshaw expresses in his tweet farther down this post, many believe that Pelosi should support and protect athletes who want to speak out – not aiding and abetting the Chinese government by trying to silence athletes.
