Zelensky has publicly acknowledged for the first time that Ukrainian forces are actively engaged in combat operations within Russian territory, specifically in the western Kursk region.

This admission highlights a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, The Hill notes in a report.

“Ukraine is proving that it really knows how to restore justice and guarantees exactly the kind of pressure that is needed — pressure on the aggressor,” Zelensky stated in a video address via the social platform X over the weekend.

This statement underlines Ukraine’s strategic intentions behind their military actions, according to the report.

Further detailing the military operations, Zelensky revealed that he has been briefed by General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine’s top military commander, on the current situation at the front lines.

He described these briefings as covering “actions and the push to drive the war onto the aggressor’s territory.”

Expressing his gratitude, Zelensky added, “I thank every unit of our defense forces that is making this possible.”

The unforeseen incursion into the Kursk region is notably the first of its kind on Russian European soil since the era of World War II, triggering a state of emergency in the area adjacent to Ukraine’s Sumy province.

After initiating the incursion on Tuesday night, Ukrainian forces, bolstered by armored vehicles, have advanced approximately 20 miles into the region, overcoming resistance, capturing Russian border guards and securing several towns, including the city of Sudzha.

In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin characterized the incursion as a “major provocation,” which has intensified concerns about potential escalations in the conflict, possibly involving Ukraine’s main ally, the United States.

However, the US Department of Defense has stated that this action by Ukraine does not represent an escalation and aligns with existing US policies.

These policies permit Ukraine to conduct strikes within Russia with American weaponry, provided these are responses to cross-border hostilities initiated by Russian forces.

Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh reiterated this stance, noting that the nature of the Kursk attack aligns with US policy, despite involving ground troops rather than aerial or drone strikes.

Amidst these developments, Russian authorities have initiated evacuations and implemented enhanced security measures in three border regions.

Additionally, Belarus, a Russian ally, has reportedly mobilized additional troops along its Ukrainian border.
