(DCWatchdog.com) – In a striking initiative supposedly designed to preserve American sovereignty and financial prudence, Republican lawmakers are now working to withdraw the United States from the United Nations.

The underwhelming support of U.S. interests by the U.N. has only fueled Congressional certainty that it’s time to prioritize the “America First” agenda.

The question now is whether the DEFUND Act will muster enough support to reclaim American autonomy.

Utah Senator Mike Lee has initiated a sweeping legislative effort to disentangle the United States from the grip of the United Nations.

By introducing the DEFUND Act, Lee aims to restore national sovereignty and ensure fiscal accountability, echoing the sentiments of many who feel the U.N. has failed to align with American interests.

At the crux of this legislative push is the belief that the U.N. has become an institution that squanders American taxpayer dollars.

As of 2022, the United States contributed over $18 billion, roughly one-third of the U.N.’s budget.

Given the lukewarm results when championing U.S. interests, many conservatives feel it’s time the country stops being the U.N.’s financial workhorse.

The DEFUND Act proposes various measures, including the repeal of statutes like the United Nations Participation Act of 1945 and the cessation of all U.S. financial support.

If successful, the Act would not only revoke diplomatic immunity for U.N. officials within the U.S. but also introduce stringent conditions before any potential reentry into the U.N.

This legislation also targets the World Health Organization, citing its inefficacy and incongruence with U.S. priorities.

“No more blank checks for the United Nations. Americans’ hard-earned dollars have been funneled into initiatives that fly in the face of our values, enabling tyrants, betraying allies, and spreading bigotry. With the DEFUND Act, we’re stepping away from this debacle. If we engage with the UN in the future, it will be on our terms, with the full backing of the Senate and an iron-clad escape clause,” declared Sen. Mike Lee, cited by Deseret News.

Support among the GOP has been strong, with Senators Marsha Blackburn and Rick Scott backing the bill.

In the House, a companion bill has been championed by Representatives Mike Rogers and Chip Roy.

Nevertheless, public opinion on U.S. withdrawal remains split. While 52% of Americans view the U.N. favorably, support is notably higher among Democrats compared to Republicans.

Critics of the U.N. have long cited its failures. Issues like ongoing wars and pandemics highlight the organization’s ineffectiveness.

President Trump’s former efforts to cut U.N. funding and withdraw from the U.N. Human Rights Council underscore a well-documented history of skepticism toward the institution.

“The United Nations has become a platform for tyrants and a place to attack America and its allies,” stated Representative Chip Roy, pointing to a concerning track record that questions why the U.S. remains a member and why billions are wasted on such inefficacies.

As the DEFUND Act awaits its fate in Congress, the outcome remains uncertain.
