As Trump vows a stronger death penalty stance, the ideological battle over criminal justice intensifies.
This move by Biden sends shock waves across the nation as families of victims grapple with the decision.
The Biden administration commuted the sentences of 37 out of 40 federal death row inmates, converting their penalties to life imprisonment without parole.
Among the spared are individuals convicted of heinous crimes, sparking outrage from many, including Trump, who believes it undermines law enforcement and victims’ rights.
Biden’s action comes as he prepares to exit office, further igniting political tension.
Trump, who expanded the federal death penalty during his term by executing 13 federal inmates, has promised to direct the Justice Department to seek the death penalty for violent criminals if he returns to the White House.
His renewed stance includes broadening capital punishment to include child rapists and those who kill U.S. citizens, law enforcement officers, and individuals involved in drug and human trafficking.
Biden’s decision did not escape criticism from law enforcement groups and some victims’ families, who feel betrayed.
Trump’s statement on Truth Social emphasized that the move makes no sense, and “Relatives and friends are further devastated,” with disbelief that such a decision could be made.
“Joe Biden just commuted the Death Sentence on 37 of the worst killers in our Country, When you hear the acts of each, you won’t believe that he did this. Makes no sense. Relatives and friends are further devastated. They can’t believe this is happening!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Biden justified his actions by pointing to his opposition to the death penalty and a prior moratorium on federal executions, claiming moral grounds except in terrorism and hate-motivated mass murder cases.
Dylann Roof, Robert Bowers, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev remain on death row.
Advocacy groups, including the ACLU, praised Biden’s move for steering away from “brutal and inhumane policies.” Still, the controversy remains palpable.
Trump reaffirmed his commitment to law and order, insisting that under his leadership, America would not shy away from administering the death penalty where warranted.
“As soon as I am inaugurated, I will direct the Justice Department to vigorously pursue the death penalty to protect American families and children from violent rapists, murderers, and monsters,” he emphasized.
