(DCWatchdog.com) – According to several reports, former President Donald Trump is demanding to be “put in handcuffs” if he gets indicted by the Manhattan DA’s Office.
Reports have circulated for a week now that Alvin Bragg, the Democrat District Attorney of Manhattan, is preparing an indictment of Trump because, in 2016, Trump allegedly made a “hush money” payment to a porn star.
Trump’s then-lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid $130,000 to porn star Stormy Daniels, reportedly to keep her from revealing that she and the future 45th president of the United States had an affair in 2006.
Last Friday, Trump predicted he would be indicted and arrested on March 21, a forecast that failed to materialize.
Meanwhile, there have been reports that the former president and his 2024 presidential campaign have decided they would like to take advantage of his potential arrest and use that as a significant PR opportunity.
76-year-old Trump has told his advisers that he would like to make a “spectacle” of his arrest if it happens, according to undisclosed sources quoted on Wednesday by The Guardian and The New York Times.
The sources said Trump wanted to be handcuffed when he got arrested and brought into the courtroom.
They also said he did not want any special treatment because that would likely make him “look weak.”
According to the report, however, Trump’s lawyers have advised him against “making a spectacle” of his arrest, and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg could also prevent that.
When the lawyers told Trump that Secret Service would be concerned for his security, the former president replied, “he didn’t care if he got shot because it would make him ‘a martyr.’”
He speculated that any attack on him could help him reclaim the White House in 2024, the reports claimed, as cited by The New York Post.
At the same time, however, both The Guardian and The NYT reports note that other people close to Trump doubt if the sources’ information is genuine.
“He wants to be defiant — to show the world that if they can try to do this to him, they can do it to anyone,” one anonymous source told the New York Times.
“I don’t think Trump is happy about the thought of being arrested. No one would be happy about getting indicted,” a Republican operative familiar with Trump’s 2024 campaign told The Daily Caller.
“I’m sure he sees how there is a political benefit to being the target of a Democrat District Attorney, but I don’t think he’s looking forward to having his fingerprints taken,” the operative added.
According to The New York Times, if Trump is indicted and surrenders, his Secret Service detail would seek to handle such a situation by avoiding a “media extravaganza.”
Thus, there are no indications that if he gets charged, the former US president “would be made to walk past reporters” while handcuffed.
A CNN report quoted a Trump legal team source as revealing an arrest or court appearance in Manhattan was not expected till next week after the grand jury, which will vote on whether to indict the former president, did not meet on Wednesday.
