(DCWatchdog.com) – Surprisingly outraising GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, Kamala Harris raised a shocking $27 million at a packed fundraiser in New York City.
While Harris has more funds than Donald Trump, a campaign aide—speaking anonymously—mentioned that the money would be crucial to counter the heavy advertising by outside groups supporting Trump.
The event was held at Cipriani Wall Street, in a huge Greek Revival ballroom lined with columns. The crowd was packed as Harris poked fun at Trump for dodging another debate with her.
“My opponent seems to be looking for an excuse,” Harris told the audience. “I feel very strongly that we owe it to the American people, to the voters, to meet once more before Election Day.”
However, Trump has refused more debates, saying, ” It’s just too late.” Early voting began last week in Minnesota, South Dakota, and Virginia. The GOP leader remarked, “Voting is already started,” during a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Harris also previewed a speech she will deliver this week, detailing her economic vision. She said there’s “more we can do to invest in the aspirations and ambitions of the American people while addressing the challenges they face.”
Moreover, by outlining her economic plan, Harris aims to address voters’ concerns over inflation during Biden’s term and distance herself from his economic record.
Harris has advocated for middle-class tax cuts and higher taxes on the wealthy and corporations. She has embraced Trump’s idea to end taxes on tipped wages—but would limit it to lower-income earners.
In addition, she has slammed Trump’s plan to impose large tariffs on most imports, arguing it would sharply raise prices for consumers.
According to the latest poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, neither candidate holds a clear lead on economic issues. The survey shows Harris is gaining ground on a topic that was once Trump’s strength.
About 4 in 10 voters think Trump would handle the economy better, while a similar number favor Harris. About 1 in 10 voters do not trust either nominee on the issue, and some believe both are equally capable.
Likewise, the poll also found that around 8 in 10 voters consider the economy a top issue in the election, well ahead of other concerns like health care and crime.
Harris has distanced herself from some of her past liberal stances, including her 2020 proposals to ban fracking, push for single-payer health care, and decriminalize illegal border crossings.
