President Trump and Putin reached a landmark agreement to initiate talks aimed at a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Both leaders acknowledged the necessity of addressing critical sectors impacting civilian life and economic stability.
This agreement serves as a tactical pause and a foundation for broader peace negotiations.
The Kremlin declared a 30-day suspension of strikes on energy infrastructure as a starting point.
It’s a move that prioritizes humanitarian efforts in areas severely affected by the ongoing war.
Putin reportedly insisted on halting foreign intelligence sharing and military aid to Ukraine.
Iran’s involvement, including missile and drone support to Russia, complicates the path to peace.
Yet both Trump and Putin agreed on the critical issue of preventing Iran from posing a threat to Israel.
Discussions about lasting peace agreements and a possible maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea continue.
“We agreed to an immediate Ceasefire on all Energy and Infrastructure, with an understanding that we will be working quickly to have a Complete Ceasefire and, ultimately, an END to this very horrible War between Russia and Ukraine,” President Trump said, cited by AP.
Negotiations are set to kick off in the Middle East. Ukraine has reportedly agreed to a U.S. plan for a temporary ceasefire, which has led to the U.S. resuming intelligence sharing.
While Trump temporarily halted military aid to Ukraine, it was reinstated after Ukraine agreed to the ceasefire proposal.
Steve Witkoff, the Trump administration’s special envoy, labeled the meeting with Putin as “positive and constructive.”
However, not all are optimistic about Russia’s commitment to the agreement, citing past violations.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko demanded security guarantees, such as maintaining Ukraine’s neutrality and keeping it out of NATO.
“It’s a bad situation in Russia, and it’s a bad situation in Ukraine. What’s happening in Ukraine is not good, but we’re going to see if we can work a peace agreement, a ceasefire and peace. And I think we’ll be able to do it,” Trump added.
Despite Trump’s admiration for Putin, tensions remain high.
Air raid alerts and explosions still plague Kyiv, casting doubt on any immediate de-escalation.
Trump and Putin spoke about a ceasefire and peace. This is what we need. America needs to stand by the side of peace. End the war. pic.twitter.com/DQ7w3f91HU
