During an interview on ABC News’s “This Week,” former Vice President Mike Pence expressed his concern over the potential indictment of former President Donald Trump by the Manhattan district attorney, stating that it would be a “politically charged prosecution.”
In defending Trump, Pence added that he was “taken aback” by the idea of indicting a former president at a time when New York City is facing a crime wave.
Pence further stated that the Manhattan DA’s focus on indicting President Trump is indicative of the radical left in the country and that it is not what the American people want to see.
He highlighted other pressing issues facing the country, including inflation, the border crisis, and the war in Ukraine.
On the other hand, Trump posted on his Truth Social media outlet, claiming that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg would arrest him for an alleged $130,000 hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.
Trump called on his supporters to “protest” and “take our nation back.”
When asked about Trump’s calls for people to “protest a justice proceeding” and how they were similar to his comments before the Jan. 6, 2021 riot, Pence stated that he believes the American people are frustrated by a “two-tier justice system in this country.”
Pence emphasized that any protests should be peaceful and lawful, adding that violence like that seen on Jan. 6 and during the summer of 2020 should not be tolerated, and those who engage in it should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Pence, who played a central role during the Jan. 6 riot, has said that he will challenge a subpoena to testify in special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation. Still, he will not fight every area covered in the subpoena.
Pence has invoked the “speech and debate” clause in the Constitution that protects lawmakers from being questioned about their official duties. Pence stated that the work he did preparing for and conducting his role as President of the Senate is covered by the speech and debate clause, and he believes they have the law on their side.
