The magnitude of this issue highlights crucial negligence in product safety, urging consumers to take immediate action.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has expanded their recall of Igloo’s rolling coolers, a move triggered by alarming reports of fingertip amputation hazards.
The recall involves the Igloo 90-quart Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers, adding an additional 130,000 units to the already staggering total.
This brings the total number of recalled units to nearly 1.2 million, including 20,000 units in Canada and 5,900 in Mexico.
Reports of injuries have mounted since the initial recall announcement in February, with 78 additional cases logged, including 26 severe instances of amputations, fractures, or lacerations.
These incidents arise from a flaw in the tow handle design, which can pinch and crush unsuspecting users’ fingertips.
Models involved in the recall, including Model 34692, Model 34785, and Model 34790, were sold from January 2019 to January 2025 at major retailers like Costco, Dick’s, Target, and on Amazon, priced between $80 and $140.
These coolers are easily identified by the “IGLOO” imprint on their side and their manufacturing date, found on the bottom, which should be prior to January 2024.
Any color variant of the affected models carries this same hazard.
Critical advisory from the CPSC underscores the need to “immediately stop using a recalled item.”
Consumers should contact Igloo customer service at 1-888-943-5182, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, for a replacement tow handle.
Until then, using these coolers poses a significant risk of injury.
“The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said you should immediately stop using a recalled item,” reports WEAU.
Consumers can safely register for the recall online or seek assistance directly from Igloo for a handle replacement.
This alarming safety lapse in consumer goods underscores the importance of stringent oversight and continual product safety evaluations to protect American families.
