(DCWatchdog.com) – As the British royal family recently learned about King Charles III’s suffering from cancer, his son and heir to the throne, Prince William, commented for the first time on the diagnosis by thanking for the public support and joking about his public appearances.

William resumed his royal obligations on Wednesday after taking a short break to care for his wife, Kate Middleton, who is recovering from an abdominal operation.

During a gala fundraising event for London’s Air Ambulance Charity, the 41-year-old Prince of Wales spoke publicly for the first time since Buckingham Palace revealed his father, King Charles’, cancer diagnosis.

“We really appreciate everyone’s kind messages. Thank you… “I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you also for the kind of messages of support for Catherine and my father, especially in recent days. It means a great deal to us all,” William said.

He even joked about the recent medical concerns surrounding his family, The New York Post reports.

“The past few weeks have a rather medical focus, so I thought I’d come to an air ambulance function to get away from it all,” the prince said.

At the event, William interacted with Tom Cruise, the star of “Top Gun: Maverick.”

The two shared a moment of mutual admiration for each other’s formal attire, both choosing to wear a bowtie.

Tana Bryer, a presenter at the event, conveyed the audience’s well-wishes to the king.

Cruise, who is 61 years old and an accomplished helicopter pilot, previously formed a connection with the late Queen Elizabeth II.

He attended Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997 and was able to meet the queen before her death in September 2022 after being invited for lunch at Windsor Castle.

Early the same day, William conducted an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle, one of his routine responsibilities.

His brother, Prince Harry, returned to California after a brief visit to support their father during his cancer treatment. Although Harry met with Charles, he did not see William.

Royal expert Katie Nicholl noted that Charles is eager to mend his relationship with Harry, who, along with his wife Meghan Markle and their children, Archie and Lilibet, stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020.

During his visit, Harry stayed at a luxury London hotel, a move interpreted as demonstrating financial independence, especially after losing entitlement to taxpayer-funded security following his departure from royal duties.
