Ottis Nicole McCoy Jr. stands accused of discarding over 1,000 pieces of mail, including vital political communications and an election ballot, in a wooded lot.
This revelation brings election security into question as the U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigates.
The accusations against McCoy surfaced after his manager noticed his mail routes were consistently shorter than expected.
Employed by a private contractor, McCoy allegedly dumped the mail to avoid delivering it, betraying his duty and the trust of those depending on timely deliveries.
Using GPS tracking, authorities found that McCoy deviated from his assigned routes.
This technological evidence, coupled with surveillance footage from a local homeowner, allegedly shows McCoy in the act of discarding mail.
The discarded items involved over 400 pieces of political mail and at least one election ballot, raising alarms about potential impacts on election outcomes.
The affidavit, according to inspectors, reveals that “more than 1,000 pieces of U.S. Mail, including more than 400 pieces of political mail and one election ballot,” were affected.
These actions constitute a violation under 18 U.S.C. § 1708, for which McCoy could face a prison sentence of up to five years, The Epoch Times reports.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is dedicated to protecting mail integrity, especially during election periods.
Michael Martel, a spokesperson for the service, emphasized their commitment by stating, “Postal Inspectors will continue to actively identify attempts to compromise the mail system our Nation is depending on during this critical time.”
The ongoing probe highlights the service’s active collaboration with local and federal law enforcement to address such significant mail-related offenses.
These measures are crucial for safeguarding the delivery of essential mail, particularly when it involves political and election-related materials.
The incident casts a spotlight on potential vulnerabilities within the mail system, reaffirming the need for stringent oversight and proactive measures to prevent future occurrences.
The case against McCoy continues to unfold as authorities dig deeper into the incident.
