(DCWatchdog.com) – Putting his Never-Trumper credentials on display, former Vice President Mike Pence stated that the Republican candidate Donald Trump is using the language of the left.
Pence claimed that by saying that his administration would be “great for women and their reproductive rights,” Trump has raised concerns among pro-life Republicans.
Pence stated, “The Trump-Pence administration stood for life without apology for four years. The former President’s use of the language of the Left, pledging that his administration would be ‘great for women and their reproductive rights’ should be concerning for millions of pro-life Americans.”
“Republicans should embrace the language of life, not the language of those who support abortion on demand. The pro-life movement must stand with the vulnerable, the mothers and the babies. We must never accept retreat on the fight for life,” he added.
Moreover, the National Institutes of Health defines the term “reproductive rights” broadly to cover issues related to health and reproductive health, such as human rights, influenced by various social, political, cultural, and economic factors.
While it is commonly used by pro-abortion activists to describe a woman’s “right” to an abortion, Trump’s use of the phrase comes just weeks after the Republican Party platform removed, for the first time in decades, the statement that an unborn child has a “fundamental right to life which cannot be infringed.”
In addition, Pence was one of the few Republicans to vocally criticize the party’s change in rhetoric when the platform was updated. He described the revised platform as a “profound disappointment to the millions of pro-life Republicans that have always looked to the Republican Party to stand for life.”
Trump has stated that the issue of abortion should be decided by individual states. In April, he confirmed his support for exceptions in cases of rape, incest, and to protect a mother’s life.
This week, the former president said he would not ban the mail delivery of abortion pills and that the “federal government should have nothing to do with this issue”—a stance not widely shared by pro-life Republicans.
“It is not a pro-life position, it’s not an acceptable position, and it does not provide the contrast on this issue to the degree that we have had in the past between him and Kamala Harris,” said Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council. “What President Trump is doing is suppressing his own support.”
