The current White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, announced that she will skip the WHCA dinner on April 26, vocalizing her discontent with the exclusive nature of the association.
Leavitt has called out the WHCA, labeling it a “monetized monopoly” that restricts White House coverage to traditional media while ignoring emerging journalistic platforms.
Leavitt claimed the WHCA’s purpose is obsolete, pointing to its inception during a time when presidential press conferences were scarce.
Today, press conferences are ample, rendering the association’s original mission redundant.
Her decision aligns with broader efforts to modernize press operations, while ensuring diverse media representation, Fox News reports.
During a candid podcast discussion with former White House press secretary Sean Spicer, Leavitt declared her stance publicly: “I will not be in attendance at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and that’s breaking news for ‘The Sean Spicer Show.'”
“[The WHCA] has truly become a monetized monopoly over the White House and the coverage of the president of the United States in America,” she stated, cited by AOL.
Leavitt’s move comes as the White House receives over 15,000 applications for a new media seat in the press briefing room, a shift away from WHCA’s control.
The Trump administration previously changed the press pool dynamics by removing permanent spots for established wire services in favor of a rotation system, giving newer and independent media a chance.
Leavitt’s decision did not go unnoticed, drawing criticism from WHCA board president Eugene Daniels, who accused the White House of undermining press independence.
He declared this decision “tears at the independence of a free press in the United States.”
Karoline Leavitt stands firm on her comments, echoing the sentiment of many Trump supporters who believe in shattering the media status quo.
This refusal to attend the WHCA dinner could pave the way for more inclusive media opportunities and reflects a growing frustration with institutional gatekeeping.
