Republican US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other pro-Trump figures have spoken out to defend former President Donald Trump amid reports that he might be criminally indicted as early as this week.
Last week, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he would be arrested on March 21, Tuesday, and called upon his supporters to protest and “take our nation back.”
Reports claim that the Office of Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg plans to indict Trump over the 2016 “hush money” scandal in which a Trump lawyer paid porn star Stormy Daniels $130,000.
Daniels allegedly threatened to reveal that she and Trump had had an affair in 2006. The former president has denied claims to that end.
Hours after Trump’s Truth Social post mentioned “illegal leaks,” a spokesman for his campaign said the post was only based on media reports by NBC News and other outlets.
“Here we go again — an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance against President Trump,” US House Speaker McCarthy reacted on Twitter.
“I’m directing relevant committees to immediately investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions,” McCarthy declared.
Former Vice President Mike Pence, who has been at odds with Trump over the events on January 6, 2021, also spoke out in his defense.
“[A potential indictment of Trump] reeks of the kind of political prosecution that we endured back in the days of the Russia hoax. This is what the Manhattan DA says is their top priority?” Pence said Saturday on SiriusXM radio.
Close Trump allies among Congressional Republicans were particularly outraged by the reports that he might be indicted.
“Knowing they cannot beat President Trump at the ballot box, the Radical Left will now follow the lead of Socialist dictators and reportedly arrest President Trump,” tweeted Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), the third-ranking Republican in the House.
Another GOP US lawmaker, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), said prosecutors were “afraid” of Trump.
“The prosecutor in New York has done more to help Donald Trump get elected president than any single person in America today,” Graham told the Vision ’24 National Conservative Forum on Saturday.
“If I were President Trump, I’d take this all the way to the damn Supreme Court,” he added, as cited by Fox News.
“If they can come for Trump, they will come for you. This type of stuff only occurs in third world authoritarian nations,” tweeted Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona.
“Virtually every campaign finance violation involves either 1) spending other people’s money illegally or 2) taking money into your campaign that you shouldn’t. Trump did neither. He used his own money to resolve a private dispute, irrespective of any campaign,” commented Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida.
“Republicans in Congress MUST subpoena these communists and END this!” reacted Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.
“We don’t need to protest. These idiots are sealing their own fate in 2024 because the silent majority has two feelings right now about the current regime,” she added.
