(DCWatchdog.com) – U.S. Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) is angry with Republicans, and anyone else who believes President Joe Biden should not limit his review of potential nominees to the United States Supreme Court to only Black women as he has repeatedly said will be the case.
As far back as the 2020 Presidential Election campaign, Biden has promised Democrats that his first nominee to the court will be a Black female. Now that Justice Stephen Breyer has announced he will retire from the court at the end of this term, Biden has again stated that his selection will be a Black woman.
Biden’s promise has caused an uproar on the right with calls of racism directed at Biden for what some see as his audacity in promising to appoint a Black woman to the Supreme Court after over 200 years of mostly White men and no Black women.
Now, Waters is defending Biden.
According to Breitbart:
“Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) said Sunday on MSNBC’s “Alex Witt Reports” that Republicans claiming President Joe Biden’s promise to choose a black woman for the Supreme Court is an example of affirmative action is both disrespectful and dishonorable.
“Waters said, “For a black woman to become a Supreme Court justice would be one of the most historic and important things this country can do and experience. It is just so exciting to think about it. I guess what is it? Over 260 years, we’ve never even had a black woman nominated. And there are only two black males on the Supreme Court. To have a black woman, there would be a game-changer.” [emphasis added]
Commenting on Republicans who’ve said that it will be a case of “affirmative action” if Biden only considers Black women, Waters said, “It’s disrespectful, dishonorable, and we are going on get past that.”
Clearly, if Biden goes ahead and selects a Black woman as his nominee to the court, the hearings will be riddled with allegations of racism from both sides of the political aisle.
