(DCWatchdog.com) – In a relatively rare, large-scale measure, Tesla Motors has announced a massive recall affecting approximately 9,100 of its Model X sports utility vehicles within the United States due to concerns that a trim component on the roof could detach.
This announcement was made on Wednesday and marks the second instance of such a recall concerning the same issue since 2020, The Guardian reports.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue centers on the front and central roof cosmetic trim pieces, which may have been attached without the necessary primer.
As a result, these pieces could potentially separate from the vehicle, thereby creating a road hazard and elevating the risk of a vehicular collision.
This particular recall targets Model X SUVs from the 2016 production year.
Tesla has identified that a procedural modification was implemented by a supplier in July 2016 which aimed to prevent this problem in subsequent models.
Tesla, established by entrepreneur Elon Musk, has committed to evaluating the adhesion of the roof trim and will reattach the trim pieces where required. This will be done at no additional charge to the vehicle owners.
“Since 2022 Tesla has been studying reports of issues involving vehicles that had undergone the recall remedy and conducted ageing tests, including heat and humidity,” the company disclosed on Wednesday.
It was determined that the solution put forth in the 2020 recall was insufficiently robust to identify cosmetic roof trim pieces that could detach due to the absence of primer.
Tesla has acknowledged approximately 170 reports and claims that might be associated with this defect.
However, the company confirmed that it has not received any reports of crashes or injuries directly related to the recall issues.
This occurrence is relatively unusual for Tesla, a company headquartered in Austin, Texas, which typically addresses such technical issues through remote software updates rather than through physical recalls.
Within the first half of this year alone, Tesla has recalled nearly 2.6 million vehicles due to various safety concerns.
This figure places them just behind Ford Motor Company, which has recalled around 3.6 million vehicles in the US, as reported by recall management platform developer Bizzycar.
Furthermore, in June, Tesla initiated a recall for its latest vehicle model, the Cybertruck.
This marks the fourth instance in which a majority of Cybertruck units have been subjected to a recall, underscoring ongoing challenges in vehicle safety and manufacturing consistency within the company.
