(DCWatchdog.com) – The Food Drug Administration (FDA) has urged Costco’s Kirkland Signature organic eggs to be recalled massively, as they are at the highest risk for salmonella contamination.
Handsome Brook Farms, the Kirkland Signature organic pasture-raised egg supplier, has initiated a voluntary recall of 24-count cartons distributed to 25 Costco stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
The FDA, in its typical heavy-handed fashion, has classified this as a ‘Class I’ risk level, suggesting a “reasonable probability” of serious health consequences or death.
The affected products are identifiable by the Julian code 327, a “use by” date of “Jan 5, 2025,” and UPC number 9661910680. Costco members who have purchased these eggs are advised to return them for a full refund.
Shauna Grob, head of operations and finance at Handsome Brook Farms, stated, “No illnesses have been reported at all.”
“We have received a number of consumer calls to confirm whether the units they had in their possession were recall-able, but that has been the only interactions we have had with consumers thus far since releasing press release and notice to Costco consumerism,” she added.
While food safety is important, it is worth questioning whether this recall is an overreaction. The FDA’s stance contradicts common sense, especially considering that thoroughly cooking eggs can prevent salmonella.
Yet, the agency advises against using the recalled eggs for cooking or baking, potentially leading to unnecessary food waste.
Moreover, this recall is part of a troubling trend of increasing food recalls over the past year.
From Frito-Lay’s potato chips to Lactaid Milk and Reser’s Fine Foods macaroni and cheese, hardly a week goes by without another recall hitting American consumers.
While young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems may be at higher risk for severe infections, the vast majority of healthy adults can safely consume properly cooked eggs without concern.
