In an attack meant for Nancy Pelosi, a former US House Speaker and current California U.S. representative, DePape’s actions were brutal and premeditated.
The new decision comes on top of the 30 years he is already serving on federal charges.
He forcibly entered the Pelosi’s San Francisco home in October 2022 and confronted Paul Pelosi, allegedly seeking Nancy Pelosi.
The attack, captured on police bodycam, led him to wield a hammer against Paul Pelosi when police arrived, causing severe injuries.
The legal proceedings culminated in a life sentence following convictions for aggravated kidnapping and other charges.
Remarkably, DePape made a rambling court statement filled with conspiracy theories but did not offer an apology to the Pelosi family.
Nancy Pelosi’s plea emphasized the gravity and lasting impact of the violence her husband suffered:
“It is therefore necessary that the guilty party’s sentence be very long as a punishment for the attack and the injuries Paul continues to suffer — and as a deterrent to others considering violence against public officials,” she said, cited by The LA Times.
DePape, initially targeting Nancy Pelosi, found himself facing serious consequences for his misguided intentions.
Despite the defense citing mental health issues and influences from his former partner, the court deemed the gravity of the offense too severe for leniency.
His lawyers plan to appeal the sentence, adding another layer of complexity to an already intense situation.
“He broke into the home of that public official, he broke into that private space of home and violently attacked a public official’s spouse,” said Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley.
“What that means and why this now is so harmful to everyone in the country and the future, is that when someone is considering now whether they want to go into public service, they have to think not only am I willing to take that risk myself, but am I willing to risk my spouse, my children, my grandchildren,” the judge added.
