(DCWatchdog.com) – First Lady Jill Biden has declared that demands that President Joe Biden, 80, be subjected to a mental fitness test are “ridiculous.”
During a TV interview with CNN, she dismissed public concerns over her husband’s age.
Jill Biden also rejected a proposal by Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, the former US ambassador to the UN, that politicians over 75 should take a mental competency test.
“Ridiculous,” the first lady said regarding Haley’s idea, as cited by Newsmax.
Her interview aired on Monday night as part of “CNN Primetime: Jill Biden Abroad.”
President Joe Biden has earned a reputation for making multiple speech gaffes, seeming confused, or exhibiting other “senior moments.”
His wife, however, insisted that his advanced age has had no impact on his ability to perform the duties of President of the United States.
“We would never even discuss something like that,” Jill Biden said regarding the possibility of her husband taking a cognitive evaluation.
She pointed to the president’s recent trip to Eastern Europe, which included a surprise visit to war-torn Ukraine before a two-day stop in Poland.
“How many 30-year-olds could travel to Poland, get on the train? Go nine more hours, go to Ukraine, meet with President [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy?” Jill Biden said.
“So look at the man. Look at what he’s doing. Look at what he continues to do each and every day,” she added.
Her comments come after, at the end of February, a Fox News poll revealed that most Americans in all age groups and political affiliations favor subjecting politicians over 75 to cognitive ability tests.
During her extensive CNN interview, Jill Biden declared her full support for her husband’s potential reelection candidacy while also giving him an opening in case he decides against running.
“It’s Joe’s decision. And we support whatever he wants to do. If he’s in, we’re there. If he wants to do something else, we’re there too,” the First Lady stated.
Jill Biden is not the only figure on the left who slammed Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley for suggesting that elderly politicians should have their mental competence tested.
Socialist Democrat US Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who is himself 81, blasted Haley’s idea as “absurd” and ageist.
“We are fighting racism. We’re fighting sexism. We’re fighting homophobia. I think we should also be fighting ageism. Trust people, look at people, and say, ‘You know, this person is competent. This person’s incompetent.’ There are a lot of 40-year-olds out there who ain’t particularly competent,” Sanders told CBS News last month.
