A growing number of Democrats appear to have concerns about the mental state of President Joe Biden against the backdrop of his recent public gaffes, a new public opinion poll has found.
A total of 64% of American voters are worried about Biden’s cognitive abilities, according to the survey conducted by Issues & Insight.
That is up from 59%, an increase of five points compared with the last time the pollster asked the same question two months ago. According to the pollster, most of the spike has come from Democrat and Democrat-leaning voters.
“Virtually all of October’s gain came from Democrats, who went from just 39% expressing ‘concern’ over Biden’s mental health in August, a high number in itself, to 52% in the latest poll,” explained Terry Jones, Issues & Insights editor.
“Let that sink in: A majority of Democrats now also think Biden possibly has mental health issues,” he emphasized, as cited by Newsmax.
The new poll results were announced less than two months before the Democrat president turns 80 at the end of November. The survey was conducted on October 5-7 with a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
The previous public opinion poll by the same pollster back in early August discovered that 82% of Republicans and 56% of independents were worried by Biden’s mental health, alongside 39% of the Democrats.
“Recent video snippets show Biden wandering off stage, apparently lost, after speaking briefly,” Jones wrote further.
The president’s recent “senior moments” that he cited include “forgetting the name of the Declaration of Independence, the nation’s founding document; not remembering that a congresswoman he was honoring at a ceremony was in fact dead, asking Where’s Jackie (Walorski)?’; invoking the possibility of nuclear ‘Armageddon’ after Vladimir Putin’s military suffered setbacks in Ukraine; and so on.”
“It may be time for Biden to undergo a mental competency test, as former President Donald Trump did — and passed,” Jones concluded.
In a recent commentary, New York University professor of medicine Dr. Marc Siegel called for an all-out examination of Biden’s cognitive abilities.
“The best way to approach Biden’s apparent multiple memory lapses and periods of disorientation is not to speculate based on video clips alone but to demand full disclosure and transparency, especially of a president almost 80 years old with a significant medical history,” Siegel wrote.
“If he decides to run again, I’m on record demanding full health transparency of all candidates for higher office, tracing back to when John McCain was 71 and running for president in 2008. I called it ‘the McCain Protocol’ in 2016 when both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were over 70 and running for president,” the professor stated.
