The Eastern European nation has proposed an unprecedented 30-day ceasefire that could pave the way for lasting peace.
Ukraine has thrown down the gauntlet, expressing openness to an immediate 30-day ceasefire with Russia.
This bold proposal came on March 11, 2025, during diplomatic talks orchestrated by the United States.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated, “The most important thing that we have to leave here with is a strong sense that Ukraine is prepared to do difficult things,” cited by ABC News.
In a pivotal move, the U.S. announced a lifting of restrictions on military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.
This represents a significant shift aimed at empowering Ukraine to stand firm against further aggression.
Talks between U.S. and Ukrainian officials took place in Saudi Arabia, signaling a serious commitment to change.
“We’re going to meet with them [the Russians] later on today and tomorrow and hopefully we’ll be able to [work] out a deal. I think the ceasefire is very important. If we can get Russia to do it, that’ll be great. If we can’t we just keep going on and people are gonna get killed, lots of people,” President Trump said, cited by The Guardian.
Steve Witkoff, representing Trump, is expected in Moscow soon to propose this ceasefire to Putin directly.
Meanwhile, President Zelensky of Ukraine thanked Donald Trump and reiterated his desire for peace.
Yet, tensions remain high as Russia launched an offensive in the Kursk region, and Ukraine retaliated with a significant drone attack on Moscow ahead of the Jeddah peace talks.
The roadmap to peace includes a temporary halt to all military actions, with provisions for humanitarian relief, including prisoner exchanges and the return of Ukrainian children forcibly transferred to Russia.
However, this proposal hinges on Russia’s agreement to put down arms and start meaningful discussions.
“This is an important moment for peace in Ukraine and we now all need to redouble our efforts to get to a lasting and secure peace as soon as possible … Russia must now agree to a ceasefire and an end to the fighting too,” stated British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, cited by The Guardian.
The agreement could also serve as a platform for broader negotiations, including a revived minerals deal between the U.S. and Ukraine, crucial for economic and security ties.
The U.S.-Ukraine statement:
1.Ukraine agrees to a 30-day ceasefire, conditional on Russia’s reciprocal implementation. The U.S. will relay this position to Russia
2.The U.S. resumes intelligence sharing and security assistance.
