Segway is recalling about 220,000 scooters sold across the United States after numerous injuries confirmed a significant fall risk.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission revealed that the folding mechanism of the Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters often fails.

This flaw can cause the handlebars or stem to collapse unexpectedly, posing a severe threat to rider safety.

According to the safety notice, Segway sold these scooters at major retailers and online, with prices ranging from $600 to $1,000.

They were available from January 2020 to February 2025, reaching a large segment of the consumer market.

These scooters, manufactured in China and Malaysia, presented a widespread issue due to the large number distributed over several years.

To date, there have been 68 reported incidents of the folding mechanism failing during use.

Segway has acknowledged 20 injuries related to these failures, which include painful abrasions, bruising, lacerations, and even broken bones.

Despite this recall not being Segway’s first, it raises questions about the company’s quality control and product testing before market release.

“Over time, depending on riding conditions, the folding mechanism may require periodic checks and tightening,” California-based Segway writes on its website. “No returns or replacements are involved.”

Consumers who own these scooters are advised to stop using them and contact Segway immediately for a free maintenance kit.

The kit provides tools and instructions necessary to inspect and adjust the folding mechanism, although this might not fully restore consumer confidence in these products.

Segway’s advisory and support contacts are available via phone, email, or the company’s website.

With this recall, Segway continues to navigate its reputation through repeated safety concerns.

Previously, the company recalled several Ninebot P100 KickScooters and Ninebot Kids bike helmets due to other safety hazards.

Segway’s ownership has changed multiple times, with significant incidents such as the death of U.K. businessman Jimi Heselden in 2010, further fueling public scrutiny.

Segway has stated that the folding mechanism could require periodic tightening depending on various riding conditions experienced by the user.

Yet, the absence of return or replacement policies in this recall remains a point of contention, particularly for those injured or financially invested in these scooters.
