(DCWatchdog.com) – Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley has joined a growing chorus of GOP figures criticizing former President Trump’s recent comments regarding now-retired Gen. Mark Milley, during which he suggested Milley should be executed.
Haley expressed her disapproval during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” stating, “I just think it’s irresponsible. I mean, you don’t need to say things like that. I think that any man or woman that has served our country deserves the highest respect. My husband is a combat veteran. He is deployed right now. They sacrifice a lot. Their families sacrifice a lot. And we should honor them every chance that we get.”
Haley’s comments align with other criticism directed at Trump for his remarks about Gen. Milley.
Trump had suggested that the top military official deserved the death penalty for actions taken at the end of his presidential term.
GOP presidential candidates Chris Christie and former Vice President Mike Pence have also pushed back against Trump’s comments.
In a post on social media, Trump stated, “This is an act so egregious that, in times gone by, the punishment would have been DEATH! A war between China and the United States could have been the result of this treasonous act. To be continued!!!”
Tensions between Milley and Trump had simmered throughout Trump’s tenure in the White House.
Milley made a pointed remark during his retirement speech last month, asserting that the U.S. military does not swear an oath to a “wannabe dictator,” an apparent reference to Trump.
In response, Trump took to Truth Social, a social media platform, to criticize Milley, saying, “Slow moving and thinking Mark Milley should never have made those calls to China’s Military Leadership. Does this moron, together with WOKE FOOL Mark Yesper (Esper!), who said ‘yes’ to everything, have any idea how dangerous a situation he put our Country in? Look at his words – STUPID & VERY DANGEROUS!”
