(DCWatchdog.com) – Top Republican members of the US House of Representatives will discuss investigating Manhattan’s Democrat DA Alvin Bragg, who indicted former President Donald Trump, one of the GOP congressmen has revealed.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH), and Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) will get together to consider probing Bragg and the political weaponization of his office, Comer has told CNN.
Their meeting is expected to take place this week. They will seek to decide on a path for investigating the Manhattan District Attorney after he refused to collaborate with House Republicans’ oversight, Breitbart News reports.
The development comes after Bragg got a grand jury to indict Trump on charges of falsifying financial records, and the former president was arraigned on Tuesday.
Last Friday, Bragg’s office admitted using about $5,000 in federal funds to investigate former President Donald Trump or the Trump Organization.
House Republicans had been interested in whether the DA used federal money to go after Trump. After his office’s admission, some GOP figures vowed to investigate Bragg for “the illegal weaponization of his office.”
“Alvin Bragg must answer under oath for the illegal weaponization of his office,” GOP House Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY) wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.
“The shameful arrest of President Trump is an unprecedented and chilling chapter in the Left’s weaponization of the justice system against their leading political opponent,” she added in a statement.
“This dangerous and illegal overreach by a radical DA has completely backfired for the corrupt Far Left Democrats who would rather desperately tear apart the fabric of our country than face President Trump at the ballot box,” Stefanik declared.
On Tuesday, Bragg charged Trump with 34 counts of falsifying business records over claims that in 2016, he paid porn star Stormy Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet about an alleged affair she had with the future president in 2006. Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The report notes that Bragg has tried to “get Trump” even before the indictment.
In 2021, during the primary race, the Democrat prosecutor bragged he had sued the Trump administration over 100 times.
In 2022, Bragg won a case in which the Trump Organization was convicted of orchestrating tax fraud for 15 years. Trump himself was not a defendant in that case.
Legal experts have blasted the Manhattan’s DA hush-money case against Trump as having little merit, with law professor Jonathan Turley saying it was “legally pathetic.”
“As it turns out, virtually everybody that has looked at this case, including RINOs, and even hardcore Democrats, say there is no crime and that it should never have been brought,” Trump declared Tuesday evening in a speech at his Florida home following his arraignment.
“Even people that are not big fans have said it. They said this is not the right thing to do,” he argued.
