(DCWatchdog.com) – Republican US Senator Bill Cassidy declared that he considers former President Donald Trump incapable of winning a “general election” in a rematch against Joe Biden.
The senior US senator from Louisiana is considered by many to be an opponent of Trump, as he voted in favor of convicting Trump in his second impeachment trial in 2021.

“I don’t think Trump can win a general election,” told the CNN program “State of the Union” on Sunday, as cited by The Washington Times.
The report notes that Trump is presently the “clear frontrunner” for the 2024 presidential nomination of the Republican Party.
Meanwhile, there have been reports that Florida’s GOP Governor Ron DeSantis would announce his candidacy later this week, just as Republican US Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina has filed preliminary paperwork for running.
“During the last election cycle, we saw that in all the swing states — almost all — Georgia, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Arizona, that the candidates for Senate that Trump endorsed all lost,” Senator Bill Cassidy said.
“If you had taken the votes that went to other Republicans and put them together, those Republicans would have won,” he argued.
He insisted that former Trump’s endorsements “actually hurt those candidates, at least in the general election,” even as the 45th president of the United States remains popular inside the GOP.
“If past is prologue, that means President Trump is going to have a hard time in those swing states, which means that he cannot win a general election,” Cassidy insisted.
The Louisiana senator’s remarks came after CNN host Jake Tapper asked him if he agreed with Ron DeSantis that Trump wouldn’t be able to “win a general election.”
“Here is something Governor DeSantis reportedly told donors on a phone call this week. ‘You have basically three people at this point that are credible in this whole thing, Biden, Trump, and Me. I think of those three, two have a chance to get elected. Biden and me.’ Do you agree with him that Trump cannot win a general election?” Tapper asked.
While Cassidy replied affirmatively, he also observed DeSantis’ comments were “a nice way for him to dis people like Tim Scott, who is a pretty formidable candidate.”
In his question, Tapper also predicted that former US Vice President Mike Pence would be “right behind” Scott in filing preliminary paperwork for running for the 2024 GOP nomination.
Besides Trump, DeSantis, Pence, and Scott as official or potential candidates, the other already official bidders for the Republican nomination are former South Carolina Governor and US Ambassador Nikki Haley, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson.
According to reports, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo are also considering candidacies.
