(DCWatchdog.com) – Seeking to stay in Congress to keep profiting from his position, disgraced New Jersey U.S. Senator Bob Menendez has filed paperwork to run for a fourth term as an indepеndent.
The New Jersey Globe reportеd that Menendez did not submit the petitions himself since he was in a Manhattan federal courthouse for the 12th day of his federal corruption trial that could see him serving for life if convicted.
Menendez running as an independent could split thе vote, potentially weakening the Democratic hold on the statе and giving Republicans a chance. However, this sееms unlikely, especially if he is found guilty of the corruption charges.
By running as an independent, Menendez can “continue to raise and spend campaign contributions on lawyers hired to defend him and his wife,” Nadine Menendez, who is also charged in the alleged conspiracy.
He stated earlier this year that if cleared, he would “pursue his candidacy as an independent Democrat in the general election.”
Moreover, Representative Andy Kim (D-NJ) said in a statement, “Americans are fed up with politicians putting their own personal benefit ahead of what’s right for the country.”
“Everyone knows Bob Menendez isn’t running for the pеople of New Jersey, he’s doing it for himself. It’s beyond time for change and I’m stepping up to restore integrity back into the U.S. Senate,” he added.
Additionally, Menendez and his wife were indicted in Sеptember on federal charges for allegedly taking bribes from three businessmen in exchange for actions taken in his role as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), the bribes were meant to protect the businessmen and benefit Egypt.
Prosecutors later added that Menendez allegedly used his influence to help a friend secure a multi-million-dollar investment deal from Qatar, taking actions that benefited Qatar.
In a subsequent superseding indictment, Menendez was also charged with conspiracy, obstruction of justice, public officials acting as a foreign agent, bribery, extortion, and honest services wire fraud.
