Today, Defense Secretary Llyod Austin (watch the video below) called the hastily executed evacuation from Afghanistan heroic and historic.
There can be no doubt that the frontline American military men and women – including the eleven men and two women who were slaughtered in last week’s suicide bombing at the airport in Kabul – acted heroically.
There also can be no doubt that, in many ways, the evacuation was “historic.” But, historic acts can be good or bad.
Clearly, historians will debate the “historic” nature of the evacuation for decades to come. Many believe historians will view it as historically bad.

Defense Sec Lloyd Austin: “We have just concluded the largest air evacuation of civilians in American history. It was heroic. It was historic.”
