(DCWatchdog.com) – Former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, has warned potential Republican presidential candidates in the 2024 election who advocate for reducing U.S. support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.
Whether Rice’s warning will carry any weight with the current candidates is unknown.
During a recent appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Rice was asked about recent comments by former President Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis regarding U.S. support for Ukraine.
Rice emphasized the importance of understanding the essence of the conflict, which she said was not just about defending Ukrainian independence but also about supporting a rules-based system.
She pointed out that whoever becomes the next president of the United States must understand that the U.S. is defending the idea that might does not make right and that neighbors cannot be extinguished.
Rice, who served in the Bush administration, warned that dropping support for Ukraine would leave a dark legacy and could eventually create problems closer to home.
She said that U.S. citizens would have to live in a world where Russia had won the war in Ukraine, knowing that their country could have done something to prevent it.
Rice added that this would not be a good message for a future president to deliver, pointing out that previous global conflicts have always come home.
Rice noted that dates such as 1914, 1941, and 2001 are reminders of how conflicts always come back to impact the U.S.
She said that this problem would come to the desk of the future president and that they should remember this when considering reducing support for Ukraine.
The conflict in Ukraine, which started a year ago, has resulted in thousands of civilian deaths, tens of thousands of military casualties on both sides, and the displacement of over 8 million Ukrainian citizens.
Last Monday, President Biden made a surprise trip to Kyiv to show ongoing U.S. commitment and announce an additional $500 million in U.S. aid. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude for the U.S. standing with Ukraine and their strong partnership, adding that they are determined to work together to ensure Ukraine’s victory.
