Breaking: Lawmakers Pass New Law Restricting Gun Rights

(DCWatchdog.com) – HAPPENING NOW: In what may be the first move by several blue states, New York just passed a new law raising the age to buy or possess a semi-automatic rifle from 18 to 21. The state also passed other restrictions that will impact all gun buyers.

As National Review writes in “New York Lawmakers Pass Bill to Raise Age to Buy Semi-Automatic Rifles”:

“New York’s legislature passed a bill to raise the age limit to buy or possess a semi-automatic rifle from 18 to 21.

“The bill, which passed the state senate along party lines in a 43-20 vote and in the state assembly in a 102-47 vote, would also require anyone buying a semi-automatic rifle to obtain a license.

Current New York law only requires licensure for handguns. Federal law already requires people to be 21 to possess a handgun.” [emphasis added]

In response to criticism and threats of legal challenges based on the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, “Democratic State Senator Gustavo Rivera dismissed concerns that the measure would infringe on Second Amendment rights saying, ‘It is meant to be a hassle to those folks who might want to get their hands quickly on something with which they could mass murder people,’ according to the AP.”

Still, the new law and its restrictions are sure to be challenged in court on Second Amendment grounds.
