James Uthmeier, who has worked for the Trump administration and has been a general counsel to DeSantis, announced his new role by writing to the Messenger, the publication that first revealed the news. The previous campaign manager, Peck, will take up a new role as the governor’s chief strategist and has expressed her support for Uthmeier, her successor. She conveyed her thoughts to the Messenger: “Governor DeSantis is running one of the most aggressive early state campaigns in modern history. Our organization welcomes the best of the best and James is one of my closest colleagues and friends — we are better for his joining and providing day to day leadership. This team is built to last and built to win.”
This significant change follows a series of challenges for the campaign, including laying off around 38 staff members in late July. The governor’s campaign was struggling in the polls, particularly against former President Donald Trump, leading to a critical examination of the campaign’s financial management. Included in those let go were approximately ten event planners, and two high-ranking campaign advisers, Dave Abrams, and Tucker Obenshain, also departed.
The decision to make these changes was explained by then-campaign manager Peck, who remarked in an official release, “Following a top-to-bottom review of our organization, we have taken additional, aggressive steps to streamline operations and put Ron DeSantis in the strongest position to win this primary and defeat Joe Biden.
