(DCWatchdog.com) – BREAKING NEWS NOW: Long Island Representative George Santos, 34, arrived at a federal court in Central Islip on Wednesday and was arrested by law enforcement authorities, as prosecutors disclosed several charges against him, including fraud, money laundering, and other crimes.
Santos is currently in custody at the courthouse, as confirmed by a representative from the prosecutor’s office. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday afternoon. The charges against him include seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds, and two counts of making false statements to the House of Representatives.
Prosecutors allege that Santos relied on dishonesty and deception to rise to a position in Congress and enrich himself.
US Attorney Breon Peace said in a statement, “This indictment seeks to hold Santos accountable for various alleged fraudulent schemes and brazen misrepresentations.”
Peace continued, “He used political contributions to line his pockets, unlawfully applied for unemployment benefits that should have gone to New Yorkers who had lost their jobs due to the pandemic, and lied to the House of Representatives.”
Santos, a Republican, made headlines last year when he admitted to fabricating details about his background and work experience. He has been under investigation for his fundraising practices during his 2022 House campaign.
Reports indicate that his financial disclosure filings were being examined after he claimed to have earned $750,000 from his Devolder Organization consulting firm and additional dividends worth between $1 million and $5 million. However, in 2020, Santos reported an annual salary of only $55,000.
