Ukrainian troops have captured two Chinese nationals engaged in combat against Ukraine’s forces in the Donetsk region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that these individuals are part of a larger contingent of Chinese citizens who have sided with Russia.
Identity documents were discovered on the captured personnel, who are now under investigation by Ukraine’s Security Service.
These developments have prompted Ukraine to take diplomatic action.
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister is set to contact Beijing, seeking an explanation for the presence of Chinese nationals within Russian military units.
Furthermore, Ukraine has summoned China’s charge d’affaires, demanding an official response to these actions and China’s responsibility in maintaining its posture as a peace advocate globally.
President Zelensky has criticized China’s involvement in the conflict, questioning its declared neutrality and intentions for peace.
“Chinese citizens fighting as part of Russia’s invasion army in Ukraine puts into question China’s declared stance for peace and undermines Beijing’s credibility as a responsible permanent member of the UN Security Council,” said Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister.
Ukraine isn’t alone in questioning China’s role.
The international community, particularly the US and European nations, is urged by Zelensky to react aptly to this development.
The president argues that foreign involvement strongly indicates Russia’s persistent intent to prolong the conflict through alliances with nations like North Korea and Iran.
“We have information that there are many more than two such Chinese citizens in the occupier’s units. We have the documents of these prisoners, bank cards, personal data,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
China, maintaining its neutral stance, appears to have deepened its partnership with Russia, encompassing trade and military collaboration.
With China’s aid supplying dual-use goods and potentially counting its citizens as auxiliary fighters, the ongoing war only underscores Russia’s steadfastness against a ceasefire.
As the dust settles over these recent captures, one fact remains pertinent: The geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, with China and Russia’s “no limits” partnership standing resolute since 2022.
Meanwhile, Kyiv looks toward international partners to uphold peace, urging Beijing to press Moscow into ending this devastating invasion.
“Russia’s involvement of China, along with other countries, whether directly or indirectly, in this war in Europe is a clear signal that Putin intends to do anything but end the war. He is looking for ways to continue fighting,” Zelensky said.
