(DCWatchdog.com) – President Joe Biden is seeing his rating on the economy tick up compared with the fall of 2022 even as more Americans are concerned on the matter, a new poll has found.
42% of US adults rate Biden’s handling of the economy as “good” or “excellent,” as per the latest survey by Rasmussen Reports, a pro-right pollster.
The number is a 6-point increase compared with October 2022, when 36% of Americans thought Biden was “good” or “excellent” concerning the US economy.
Despite the slight uptick, however, the new survey showed that a higher share – 45% – rate the Democrat president’s economic performance as “poor,” Newsmax reported.
The poll discovered that almost all – or 88% – of Americans are worried about the economy, while 60% are very concerned. Only 11% said they were not worried about the matter.
Rasmussen notes the respondents’ answers are almost the same as in October.
According to 61% of US adults, the American economy deteriorated over the past year, 22% said it remained the same, and 26% said it improved.
The report pointed out that inflation in the US declined to 4.9% on March 31, 2023, down from 8.54% a year ago.
Over the past year, the Fed hiked interest rates to tame inflation. Unemployment stands at 3.5%, but “a majority” of economists are forecasting a recession against the backdrop of some bank collapses in the US and abroad.
The survey found that 85% of Democrats, 93% of Republicans, and 87% of independents are at least somewhat concerned about the economy.
Among those, 52% of Democrats, 71% of Republicans, and 58% of independents said they were very concerned.
At the same time, 34% of Democrats, 64% of Republicans, and 55% of Independent voters believe the economy has improved over the past year.
Conversely, 40% of Democrats, 19% of Republicans, and 19% of unaffiliated voters think the US economy improved in the past year.
Biden’s approval of his economic performance mostly runs along party lines, with 69% of Democrats, 23% of Republicans, and 31% of independents giving him a “good” or “excellent” rating.
Only 18% of Democrats but 66% of Republicans and 52% of independents think the president deserves a “poor” rating on his handling of the economy.
In ethnic terms, 47% of whites, 63% of blacks, and 52% of other minorities told the pollster that the US economy deteriorated over the past year.
All groups were “very concerned” about the state of the economy, with 56% of whites, 72% of blacks, and 66% of other minorities.
Rasmussen found that men were more likely than women to rate Biden’s economic performance as “poor” – at 48% vs. 42%.
Among different income groups, 47% of Americans making over $200,000 annually said the economy improved over the past year, while over 60% of those earning under $100,000 annually think it worsened.
Rasmussen Reports polled 950 likely US voters on April 9-11, 2023. The survey has a margin of error of 3 percentage points with a 95% confidence level.
