Conservatives are encouraged by this move, as it ensures that America reinforces its historical roots.
It’s a win for American symbolism and a nod to unyielding patriotism as the country faces numerous challenges.
President Joe Biden’s decision marks a historic moment, solidifying the bald eagle not as just a majestic symbol, but as the official representation of American strength and freedom.
The bald eagle, already significant for appearing on the Great Seal since 1782, now rightfully earns its title, aligning official status with historic symbolism.
The new designation, which amends Title 36 of the United States Code, passed Congress unanimously.
Despite being a cherished symbol for nearly 250 years, its official recognition took nearly two and a half centuries.
“For nearly 250 years, we called the bald eagle the national bird when it wasn’t,” said Jack Davis.
Efforts to officially designate the bald eagle emanated from Minnesota, home to one of the largest populations of the species.
The state’s legislators spearheaded the campaign with significant contributions from Minnesota resident Preston Cook.
His resolve ensured that historic oversight was corrected while paying homage to an emblem synonymous with American values.
“No one has to change anything; it’s just a correction. It is only a correction in history to make things right and make things the way they should be,” Cook stated.
Benjamin Franklin historically objected to the bird, calling it a “bird of bad moral character.”
Opinions aside, the bald eagle has triumphed over extinction threats, rebounding significantly after the U.S. banned DDT in 1972 and conservation efforts increased.
The population was removed from the endangered species list in 2007.
The passage comes at a crucial time as climate change still threatens the bald eagle’s habitat.
However, its official designation bolsters efforts for ongoing conservation and environmental appreciation, preserving a national treasure for generations to come.
Senators Klobuchar, Lummis, Mullin, Smith, and Representatives Finstad, Craig, and Emmer were hailed for their leadership.
Their bipartisan efforts reflect the unity that this majestic creature symbolizes as it stands for courage, freedom, and immortality—a fitting embodiment for the United States itself.
