Biden’s Anti-Police Nominee Forced Out; GOP Celebrates

Gigi Sohn

(DCWatchdog.com) – President Joe Biden has lost a 16-month-long battle to appoint a pro-leftist anti-police lawyer on the Federal Communications Commission after adamant opposition by police groups and criticism from both sides of the political aisle.

On Thursday, Biden’s nominee in question, Democrat Gigi Sohn, withdrew her bid to become an FCC commissioner.

She had been the target of “unrelenting, dishonest, and cruel attacks” from “the cable and media lobbyists,” Breitbart News reported.

The report notes that Democrat commissioners at the FCC still don’t have a majority, which leaves them unable to implement the party agenda at the critical agency.

“It is a sad day for our country and our democracy when dominant industries, with assistance from unlimited dark money, get to choose their regulators,” Biden’s failed FCC nominee declared in a statement provided to The Washington Post.

“And with the help of their friends in the Senate, the powerful cable and media companies have done just that,” she added.

President Joe Biden re-nominated Sohn earlier this year after, in the previous Congress, Senate Democrats couldn’t secure a majority for her confirmation.

Sohn’s nomination withdrawal came after Democrat US Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia said he would oppose her confirmation due to her “toxic partisanship.”

Another Democrat US Senator, Jacky Rosen of Nevada, was worried by Sohn’s anti-police rhetoric.

“I’d like to echo concerns raised about the nominee’s positions on matters of importance for law enforcement, both nationally and in Nevada,” Rosen said during a Senate hearing on February 14 hearing.

The Fraternal Order of Police and the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) argued that Sohn should be disqualified from the FCC for anti-police rhetoric.

NAPO chief William Johnson, the executive director of the association of police organizations, noted Biden’s nominee once retweeted a person describing the police as “armed goons in riot gear with tear gas.”

The GOP celebrated the failure of Gigi Sohn’s FCC bid, including Texas US Senator Ted Cruz, the ranking member of the Senate Commerce Committee.

“The withdrawal of Ms. Sohn’s nomination is a major victory and represents a strong bipartisan agreement that we need a fair and impartial candidate who can receive the support needed for confirmation,” Cruz declared.

In 2018, Sohn was appointed to the board of the Electronic Freedom Foundation, and two years later, the organization presented a dominatrix named Mistress Blunt with its “pioneer award.”

Sohn has described Fox News as “state-sponsored propaganda” and “dangerous to democracy” and has hinted that the Sinclair Broadcast Group, a conservative-run network of local TV stations, could see its broadcast license revoked.

Sohn also chaired and co-founded Public Knowledge, a leftist advocacy that urged cable and satellite companies to cancel the conservative One America News Network.

In November 2020, Sohn shared the anti-police views of US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, retweeting her post.

“When It Comes To “Defund” & “Socialism” Attacks, People Need to Realize These are Racial Resentment Attacks. You’re Not Gonna Make That Go Away. You Can Make it Less Effective,” AOC tweeted.
