(DCWatchdog.com) – In a bombshell report, the Sine Institute for Policy and Politics at American University revealed that 83% of young adults are worried about the state of U.S. democracy.
The poll was conducted between late July and early August 9. It shows that 83% of young adults either strongly agree (42%) or somewhat agree (41%) that they are “worried about the state of our democracy.”
Another 17% disagree, with 4% strongly disagreeing and 13% somewhat disagreeing. The poll offers insight into how people aged 18 to 34 view the country’s future.
Moreover, three-quarters of respondents say they’re “optimistic and hopeful” about their own futures, with 30% strongly agreeing and 45% somewhat agreeing. Only 7% strongly disagree, and 18% somewhat disagree.
However, when it comes to the future of the U.S., fewer young adults share that same optimism.
A narrow majority (53%) are not hopeful about the country’s future, with 37% somewhat pessimistic and 16% strongly feeling that way.
In addition, just under half (47%) are optimistic about the U.S., including 15% who strongly agree and 32% who somewhat agree.
As the 2024 election approaches, 48% of young adults support Kamala Harris, while 27% back GOP leader Donald Trump. Fourteen percent would opt for a third-party candidate if one is on the ballot, and 11% remain undecided.
Among registered voters in this age group, Harris does better, getting 55% support compared to Trump’s 24%. Third-party candidates receive 11%, and 10% are undecided. This includes those who “lean” toward a specific candidate.
In a direct matchup, Harris garners 55% of support from young adults, Trump gets 33%, and 12% remain undecided. For registered voters, Harris receives 61%, Trump 29%, and 10% stay undecided.
The poll was conducted by Generation Lab, with 1,214 online interviews of young adults.
